AC Milan have been left shocked at the lack of response over a new contract for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Football Italia have reported.
The highly rated youngster was expected to make a decision over the offer, worth over €4m per year, on Tuesday.
The development has reportedly left Milan frustrated and shocked, and in doubt over the future of one of their key players.
Donnarumma's situation is set to be discussed on Thursday when agent Mino Raiola flies into Milan, although the player and club came very close to a complete breakdown in talks.
Milan director Massimiliano Mirabelli reportedly contacted Donnarumma directly on Wednesday while the youngster was in Rome training with the Italy Under-21 squad ahead of the European Championship.
CEO Marco Fassone called Raiola and seems to have calmed the tension ahead of the scheduled meeting on Thursday.
Despite
the speculation and uncertainty over Donnarumma, the 18-year-old
recently expressed his desire to stay with the Rossoneri.
"Everyone knows that my wish is to stay at Milan," he said. "I’m looking for a house in the city to live with my family.
‘I’m
calm, all the parties involved know the decision I’ve made. I’m very
much tied to these colours. Both Mino and Enzo Raiola and I are a
cohesive team.’
