AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo has called for the club to stand behind manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, despite the 47-year-old's position looking increasingly uncertain.
Milan
sit in sixth place in Serie A, comfortably behind city rivals Inter and
a massive 24 points off the pace of league leaders Juventus after
another mediocre season.
But Montolivo said this week: "The team have always been behind him and I know that under pressure, the coach always gives the best of himself. We
are all pushing together to try to get through this difficult time and
we will do everything we can to turn things around on the field.
"Over the last three or four years, we have been accustomed to hearing different people mentioned with the job. However, the club and the team have full confidence in our coach. I really hope that next year we continue with him again.”
He continued: “This is a sensitive time, given that we have picked up two points in our last four games. It isn’t acceptable to pick up such few points. The
retreat is not the solution to all of our problems but at this time, we
all need to realise that things can’t continue like this. We spoke at
length with Mihajlovic about the situation.
“We
are all trying to figure out what has happened in the last four games.
There have been technical and mental problems but I’m maybe not the
right man to ask about how we get back to a winning Milan.”
Former Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has also weighed in, telling Gazzetta dello Sport: “As
I’ve said before, coaches should never take 100 percent of the blame.
It was a bad year that can be rectified only by winning the Coppa
Italia. It’s obvious that there are problems."
