Kaka has admitted that he is still haunted and perplexed by Liverpool’s famous 2005 Champions League final win.
The Brazilian midfielder was a vital cog in the star-studded AC Milan
team that Liverpool faced in Istanbul that night, and helped the
Italians race into a 3-0 half-time lead.
But, as we all know, the Premier League side roared back in the
second half, courtesy of a Steven Gerrard-inspired display and scored
three times in six amazing minutes.
The match finished 3-3 and after extra-time, Liverpool went on to seal a fairytale victory on penalties.
And former Ballon d’Or winner Kaka, now playing in the MLS with
Orlando City, admits he is yet to get over such a humbling defeat.
In an interview with Radio Cope, via The Mirror,
the Brazilian said: “Honestly, years later I still can’t understand how
we managed to lose that game. We had the best defenders in the world in
that team.
“Our back four was Cafu, Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta and Paolo
Maldini but we still let in three goals in six minutes. Something
amazing happened that can’t be explained.
“All you can really say is that in football these things can happen.
Especially in the Champions League, we have seen truly incredible things
happen.
Kaka and his team-mates at Milan needn’t have worried, as they would
go on to exact their revenge by winning the 2007 final of the same
competition against Liverpool in a rematch in Athens. But, still, the scars of that famous night in Turkey will live on for
a lifetime in the memory of not just fans, but players too, it seems.
