Bertolacci: “It was a must-win match, we slipped up vs. Sassuolo but there are still 11 matches to play”

Andrea Bertolacci says Milan should have been more clinical as they lost 2-0 to Sassuolo and effectively saw their Champions League hopes dashed. After two months without a defeat with saw Milan getting closer to third place, the Rossoneri suffered a bad loss on Sunday as Eusebio Di Francesco’s Sassuolo beat il Diavolo for the third time in a row at the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore.
“We should have broken the deadlock in the opening 25 minutes and we should have been more clinical,” said Bertolacci, who played in the place of the injured Montolivo. “We conceded after a well-worked corner and it was more difficult from there and they kept winning the rebounds.
“We all saw the incident that led to their second goal (clear foul on Bertolacci) and the match ended there. We should have reacted earlier, but we played with the desire to win and we’re left feeling disappointed because this was a must-win match. Sassuolo play good football, but we needed a different result to this.
“You can always learn from your errors, but we have to take a step back and try and understand what didn’t work today. What’s more, we cannot forget all the good things we have done up. We had to win to keep in touch with the sides ahead of us, but we cannot change the past and we have to move on.
“We slipped up today but there are still 11 matches to play this season in Serie A.” Milan’s next match is in one week against Chievo Verona at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
